Der Akkusativ

Akkusativ: subject and object

Find the subject and the object of a sentence, and learn the articles in the Akkusativ.

Finding the subject and the object

  • The subject is in the Nominativ. The object is in the Akkusativ (short: Akk).
  • Find the subject: ask “Who + verb?”
  • Find the object: ask “What is being + verb in past tense?” or “What does the subject + verb?”

Examples

  • Peter kauft einen TischPeter buys a table (subject: Peter, object: a table)
  • Ich lese ein BuchI read a book (subject: I, object: a book)
  • Der Hund sieht die KatzeThe dog sees the cat (subject: the dog, object: the cat)

Why is this important?

  • We use different articles for subjects and objects. Only the masculine article changes.
