Singular & plural
Seven tips for making plurals. They work most of the time, but there are exceptions.
Making plurals
- Singular = one (das Buch). Plural = more than one (die Bücher).
- The plural article is always die.
- The tips below work in most cases, but there might be exceptions.
- To check a plural, look the noun up in an online dictionary. The course video description also links a list of important nouns with plurals.
1. Nouns ending in -e: add -n
- die Straße → die Straßen
- das Auge → die Augen
- der Name → die Namen
2. Masculine nouns (der): add -e
- der Tisch → die Tische
- der Hund → die Hunde
- der Tag → die Tage
3. Feminine nouns (die): add -en
- die Frau → die Frauen
- die Tür → die Türen
- die Zeitung → die Zeitungen
4. Neutral nouns (das): add -er
- das Kind → die Kinder
- das Lied → die Lieder
- das Bild → die Bilder
5. Nouns ending in -er, -el, -en, -chen: only the article changes
- das Zimmer → die Zimmer
- das Möbel → die Möbel
- der Kuchen → die Kuchen
- das Mädchen → die Mädchen
6. Add -s: non-German nouns, abbreviations, and nouns ending in o, a, i, u, y
- das Team → die Teams
- das Hotel → die Hotels
- das PC → die PCs
- die CD → die CDs
- das Handy → die Handys
- das Büro → die Büros
7. Umlaut in the plural (ä, ö, ü): you have to memorize these
- das Buch → die Bücher
- der Mann → die Männer
- die Stadt → die Städte
- der Apfel → die Äpfel
