Prepositions that answer “Wo?” (Where?). When nothing is moving, they take the Dativ.

Location prepositions

  • A preposition shows the relationship between things. Lokale Präpositionen show the relationship with a location and answer the question “Wo?” (Where?).
  • A1 has 10: in, auf, an, neben, vor, hinter, unter, über, zwischen, bei.
  • When the object is not moving (stationary), all of them take the Dativ.

Short forms

  • Contractions: im = in + dem. am = an + dem. beim = bei + dem.

in: inside something

  • Wo ist die Katze?Where is the cat?
  • Die Katze ist im KartonThe cat is inside the carton
  • Wo ist das Buch?Where is the book?
  • Das Buch ist in der TascheThe book is in the bag
  • Wo wohnst du?Where do you live?
  • Ich wohne in DeutschlandI live in Germany (countries without an article: no article)
  • Ich wohne in der SchweizI live in Switzerland (countries with an article use the Dativ)

auf: on horizontal surfaces, touching the surface

  • Der Laptop liegt auf dem SofaThe laptop is on the sofa

an: on vertical surfaces and at specific places

  • Der Spiegel hängt an der WandThe mirror is hanging on the wall
  • Das Bild hängt am KühlschrankThe picture is on the fridge
  • Wo bist du?Where are you?

neben: beside

  • Der Stuhl steht neben einem TischThe chair is next to a table

vor: in front of
