hinter: behind

  • Das Regal steht hinter dem SofaThe shelf is behind the sofa
  • Mein Haus ist hinter einem SupermarktMy house is behind a supermarket

unter: under

  • Die Tasche ist unter dem TischThe bag is under the table
  • Das Fahrrad steht unter dem DachThe bicycle is standing under the roof

über: above, not touching the surface

  • Der Ventilator hängt über dem TischThe fan is above the table
  • Die Lampe hängt über dem SofaThe lamp is above the sofa

zwischen: between two things

  • Der Stuhl steht zwischen dem Tisch und dem SofaThe chair is between the table and the sofa
  • Die Zeitung liegt zwischen den BüchernThe newspaper is between the books (plural: den + n)

bei: close to, at (always Dativ), also with people, company and activities

  • Die Tasche steht beim SofaThe bag is near the sofa
  • Ich übernachte bei meiner SchwesterI will stay at my sister’s

Short form

  • beim = bei + dem.
