sein & haben

The two most common verbs in German: to be and to have. Learn them by heart.

What is a conjugation?

  • Conjugation means the verb changes its form. The form depends on the pronoun (and on the tense).
  • Example: I am happy, you are happy, he is happy.
  • The infinitive is the most basic form of a verb, the one in the dictionary: sein, haben.
  • sein (to be) describes something or someone. haben (to have) shows possession.
