Die Uhrzeit

Telling the time

Ask the time and tell it the formal way (24 hours) and the informal way (vor, nach, Viertel, halb).

How to ask the time

  • Wie viel Uhr ist es?What time is it?
  • Wie spät ist es?What time is it?

24-hour time

  • German uses 24-hour time (00:00 – 24:00). There is no AM or PM.
  • 07:00 PM = 19:00. 03:00 PM = 15:00.
  • Vormittag = before midday. Nachmittag = after midday.

On the hour

  • Es ist 7 UhrIt is 7 o’clock (7:00 AM)
  • Es ist 19 UhrIt is 19 o’clock (7:00 PM)
  • Es ist 4 UhrIt is 4 o’clock (4:00 AM)
  • Es ist 16 UhrIt is 16 o’clock (4:00 PM)

Formal way: Es ist [hour] Uhr [minutes]

  • Es ist 16 Uhr 35It is 4:35 PM
  • Es ist 4 Uhr 5It is 4:05 AM
  • Es ist 3 Uhr 55It is 3:55 AM
  • Es ist 4 Uhr 15It is 4:15 AM
  • Es ist 16 Uhr 45It is 4:45 PM
  • Es ist 8 Uhr 35It is 8:35 AM

Informal way: vor and nach (up to 20 minutes)

  • Es ist 5 nach 4It is 5 after 4
  • Es ist kurz nach 4It is shortly after 4
  • Es ist 5 vor 4It is 5 before 4
  • Es ist kurz vor 4It is shortly before 4

Informal way: quarter past, quarter to, half

  • Es ist Viertel nach 4It is a quarter past 4 (4:15)
  • Es ist Viertel vor 5It is a quarter to 5 (4:45)
  • Es ist halb 4It is half to 4, that is 3:30
  • Es ist 5 nach halb 9It is 5 after half to 9, that is 8:35 (rarely used)

Careful with halb

  • In the informal way, “halb” means halfway to the next hour: halb 4 = 3:30, not 4:30.
  • Rule for time: Es ist [hour] Uhr [minutes].
  • Use the formal way. There is less chance of a mistake.
