Modal verbs

Six helper verbs that show wish, ability, duty or permission: wollen, können, sollen, müssen, dürfen, mögen.

What are modal verbs?

  • Modal verbs show your attitude or mood towards an action.
  • Ich lerne Deutsch (I learn German) becomes Ich will Deutsch lernen (I want to learn German): the modal verb adds desire.
  • Ich muss jeden Tag Sport machen (I must exercise every day): the modal verb adds obligation.
  • All modal verbs are irregular: the stem changes when they are conjugated.

Sentence structure with modal verbs

  • Rule 1: the modal verb is in 2nd position, in its conjugated form.
  • Rule 2: the main verb goes to the last position, in the infinitive.
  • Normal sentence: Wir machen eine Pause (We are taking a break).
  • With a modal verb: Wir wollen eine Pause machen (We want to take a break).

Tips to remember the forms

  • ich and er / es / sie always have the same form: will, kann, soll, muss, darf, mag.
  • du adds -st to that form: willst, kannst, sollst, darfst, magst (musst takes only -t).
  • ihr adds -t to the plural stem: wollt, könnt, sollt, müsst, dürft, mögt.
  • wir, sie and Sie use the infinitive: wollen, können, sollen, müssen, dürfen, mögen.

Careful with mögen

  • mögen is used with things or people (Ich mag Pizza). It is not used together with another verb.
