About DeutschStart A1

DeutschStart A1 is a free German course for complete beginners, aimed at the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

What you can do here

The course has 14 chapters, from the alphabet and greetings to the doctor's office. Each chapter has interactive lessons where you can learn new words, listen to German audio, practice speaking with your microphone, and test yourself with quizzes. A written guide for every chapter explains the grammar in plain English, with tables, examples and the mistakes beginners make most often.

Why it exists

Many beginner resources are either too dry or hide the basics behind a paywall. This course is built to be clear, free and easy to use on a phone, so that you can practice a few minutes at a time.

How your progress is saved

You do not need an account. By default your progress, streaks and badges are stored on your own device, in your browser, so clearing your browser data or switching devices means starting again. Where accounts are available, you can sign up to keep your progress on every device.

Who runs it

DeutschStart A1 is run by Abdul Manan. This site is an independent learning project and is not affiliated with the Goethe-Institut or any official exam provider.
