German Articles: Der, Die, Das Explained
Every German noun has one of three genders: masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das). The gender is a property of the word and often has nothing to do with meaning, so the most useful habit you can build is to learn each noun together with its article.
Definite and indefinite articles
The definite article means the. The indefinite article means a or an. In the plural, the definite article is always die, and there is no indefinite article, just as English says books and not a books.
| Gender | the | a / an | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masculine | der | ein | der Tisch (the table) |
| Feminine | die | eine | die Lampe (the lamp) |
| Neuter | das | ein | das Buch (the book) |
| Plural | die | (none) | die Bücher (the books) |
Endings that reveal the gender
Many nouns give you a hint through their ending. These patterns are reliable enough to save you a lot of memorizing.
| Ending or group | Article | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion | die | die Zeitung, die Freiheit, die Nation |
| -er for people, days, months, seasons | der | der Lehrer, der Montag, der Sommer |
| -chen, -lein (diminutives) | das | das Mädchen, das Fräulein |
| -um, -ment | das | das Datum, das Dokument |
Forming the plural
German has several plural patterns, and the pattern is not fully predictable, so learn it with the noun. The most common ones are: adding -e (der Hund, die Hunde), adding -en (die Frau, die Frauen), adding -er and an umlaut where possible (das Kind, die Kinder), adding -s mostly for words from other languages (das Auto, die Autos), adding an umlaut (der Vater, die Väter), and no change at all (der Lehrer, die Lehrer).
How to learn nouns
Write and say the noun with its article every time: der Tisch, die Lampe, das Buch. Use colors if you take notes, for example blue for der, red for die and green for das. When you meet a new noun, also note its plural form, because you will need it constantly.
Common mistakes
- Learning nouns without their articles. Das Mädchen (the girl) is neuter, even though a girl is female, because of the -chen ending.
- Assuming the article follows the meaning. Der Löffel (spoon), die Gabel (fork) and das Messer (knife) are all different genders.
- Using ein with a plural noun. Say Ich habe Bücher, not Ich habe eine Bücher.
Practice
Look around the room and name ten objects with their articles. Then check each one in a dictionary and fix any you got wrong.
