German Perfekt Tense and Vocabulary for the Home
The Perfekt is the main past tense in spoken German. It is built from a helping verb (haben or sein) in second position and a past participle at the end of the sentence.
Forming the past participle
Regular verbs use ge- plus the stem plus -t: machen becomes gemacht and lernen becomes gelernt. Irregular verbs use ge- plus the stem plus -en, and often change the vowel: essen becomes gegessen, trinken becomes getrunken and sehen becomes gesehen.
Separable verbs put ge between the prefix and the stem: aufstehen becomes aufgestanden and einkaufen becomes eingekauft. Verbs that start with be-, ver-, ent- or er- and verbs ending in -ieren do not add ge-: besuchen becomes besucht and verstehen becomes verstanden.
haben or sein?
Most verbs use haben: Ich habe gestern Pizza gegessen. Wir haben Deutsch gelernt. Use sein for verbs of movement from one place to another and for verbs that describe a change of state, as well as for sein and bleiben itself.
| Verb | Perfekt with sein | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| gehen | Ich bin gegangen. | I went. |
| fahren | Wir sind gefahren. | We drove. |
| kommen | Er ist gekommen. | He came. |
| bleiben | Sie ist geblieben. | She stayed. |
| aufstehen | Ich bin aufgestanden. | I got up. |
Word order
The helping verb stays in second position and the participle goes to the very end: Gestern habe ich einen Film gesehen. Am Samstag sind wir in den Park gegangen.
Vocabulary for the home
die Wohnung (apartment), das Haus (house), das Zimmer (room), die Küche (kitchen), das Badezimmer (bathroom), das Schlafzimmer (bedroom), das Wohnzimmer (living room), der Flur (hallway), der Balkon (balcony), der Garten (garden), der Tisch (table), der Stuhl (chair), das Bett (bed), das Sofa (sofa) and der Schrank (cupboard).
Common mistakes
- Putting the participle in the middle of the sentence. It always goes last.
- Using haben with verbs of movement. Say Ich bin nach Hause gegangen.
- Adding ge- to verbs that do not take it, such as besucht, not gebesucht.
